Chapter 2- What A Captain Has To Do                                                                                     *Danielle*
I wake up to my crew members shouting and yelling, “Attack!”
I sit up out of bed, and Goodman comes in my cabin and comes over to me, trying to get me to wake up, “Hurry up Lady Danielle; we are under attack by another pirate ship. You need to hurry up and get ready, I’ll hold the pirates out of here as long as I can.”
Goodman grabbed a sword, and left my cabin; I quickly got changed. I put my hat and mask on, grabbed my two swords and put them at my hips. I also grabbed my dagger and put it on the side of my boot. Geez, and just when we wanted to avoid pirates. I open the door and Goodman has a few bodies lying at his feet. He is also holding someone back, and I pull out my swords, and cut the other pirate while I was hiding behind Goodman.
“Good timing,” Goodman said, walking forward, and letting me pass. More pirates came at us, and we attacked and killed them quickly.
“When did they get here?” I asked, holding up my swords, showing that I am ready to fight.
“Only five minutes ago,” Goodman began; I then noticed another ship next to ours. They must have dropped our anker, and tied our ships together while we slept, “They said that they saw us take ‘their’ supplies and women from that ship yesterday.”
“Just great, we do something good, and we get in trouble for it,” I muttered. I quickly start cutting the ropes to separate our ships, “Goodman, hurry and lift the anker!”
I see Goodman go over to the wheel and begin to turn it. As he did that, I cut ropes, and any pirate who opposed me.
“What do we have here?” I heard a man say. I turn around, and clash swords with a strange man. He has bright green eyes, and light blond hair.
“Captain!” Goodman yelled.
I turned my head and shouted at him, “Stay where you are! The quicker we get the anker up, the quicker we can get away from them!”
I see him nod his head and quickly turn the wheel. I look back at the guy I’m up against, and see him grin.
“What a coincidence that you are captain of this ship. You don’t look so touch to me,” the man said pushing me back, but I try slicing him with my other sword. He stops it with a dagger hidden in his sleeve; that technique! “I see you use two swords to fight, do you happen to be a part of the Dengica clan? No, you couldn’t be, considering they all perished two years ago.”
“You’re a Hedorican, aren’t you?” I questioned. The Hedorican clan specializes in hiding weapons on different parts of their bodies. That sleeve technique proves it.
“Oh? You know of them? Well it just so happens that I’m one of the best, and I’m captain of that ship,” He spoke; our swords are still together and our faces are fairly close, “So tell me, are you trying to reestablish the Dengica clan, or are you merely a fan of their fighting style?”
I narrow my eyes, “That’s of no concern to you; now leave my ship at once!”
I tried pushing this man back, but he’s a lot stronger than me. All I can do is clash swords with him, until Goodman can raise the anker and cut the rest of the ropes.
“Before I leave this ship, I’m going to kill you,” The man spoke, pushing me back, causing me to lose my balance and fall to the ground. The man put his sword to my throat, “Well, I guess the Dengica clan will never be reestablished.”
“No! Milady!” I heard Goodman shout, and the wheel turn fast. He let go of the wheel! I turn to look at him, and see him falling off the ship, with blood on his shoulder!
“Goodman!” I yelled, about to run to him, but I feel a foot step on my back, causing me to stay to the ground. A sword then came to the side of my face; I see the man I was fighting glaring at me.
“I don’t see any women on this ship, so why did he call you ‘milady’ just now?” he asked with curiousness in his eyes. I didn’t answer; all I want is to make sure Goodman survived the fall. When I tried to move though, this guy put more pressure on my back, “Answer me! If you’re a girl, and you use that type of fighting style, then you must be…” The man said, in shock.
I look at him, “Just kill me already, what are you waiting for?! Who cares if I’m a girl?!”
He then laughs, “It all makes sense now! Why didn’t I realize it before?!”The second the pressure was lifted from my back, I was pulled upward, and fell against this guy; he put his arm around me waist, “Let’s retreat men! We’ve got all we need right here!” The man said, putting his sword to my throat.
“Right away, Captain Jackson!” Some of the men shouted, and retreated. I saw some of my men dead or wounded.
Jackson then grabs a rope next to him and tightens his grip on me, and swings from the rope to the ship next to us. As we swing to the ship, I pull out my dagger from my boot and slice his shoulder. He screeched, and released me, shocked that I had cut him.
“You’re not the only one who can hide weapons!” I yelled as I fell. I then realized that I was going to fall in the water. It’s better than Jackson finding out my identity though. I shut my eyes, and hold my breath, preparing for the worst. That is, until I realized the worst is another man catching me as I was falling.
“Nice try Jackson, you won’t get her that easily!” the man who caught me said, flying to the other side of Jackson’s ship while holding onto a rope and me. I then noticed another ship on the other side of Jackson’s; that must be this guy’s ship. He landed on the crow’s nest and cut the man up there with his sword. I noticed that this man cuts with on ‘x’ when he cuts. Is he from the Exbilibent clan? The Exbilibent clan specializes in cutting people down with a symbol on their body. This guy knows that I’m a girl too?!
“Hmph you should have stayed back on Hatnica Island!” Jackson yelled, grabbing the rope and swinging over to us. I try getting away from the guy holding onto me, but his grip on me was too tight.
“Heh, my men and I hated it there it’s your fault for stealing our boat!” the man who had me said, grabbing the rope and dropping down to the deck. Hatnica Island is an island where pirates go to look for the treasure hidden on it. However, there are a lot of pirates there, and most of the time, you lose your ship if you go. So I never took my ship there.
“Then I should have killed you there when I had the chance!” Jackson said, clashing swords with the man. I am able to slip out of the man’s grip and grab a sword lying on the ground. I look over to my ship and see the planks still there. I take a few steps toward my ship.
“You’re not going anywhere!” I heard Jackson yell, and suddenly I felt a sharp pain in the back of my left leg. I fall to the ground and look at my leg to see a dagger stuck in the back of my calf! I look back at the two men fighting and see Jackson grinning, “Don’t think that just because we are fighting that you’ll escape me.”
Damn, my leg is starting to go numb… I pull out the dagger and quickly apply pressure to my leg. I look back at the two men and see that they are both equally matched. Whoever wins this fight will get me. Jackson seems ruthless, but the Hedorican clan isn’t known for its killings; however, the Exbilibent clan is known for their killings. My safe bet would be to go to with Jackson. I use the sword to stand, and I’m about to go attack the other man when two men grab me by the arms from behind.
“Captain Roger, the bombs are set, we have to leave before they go off!” The man on my left said.
“You set bombs on my ship?!” Jackson yelled at Roger angrily.
“Heh, it’s your fault for leaving it unguarded!” Roger said, grabbing a rope and swinging to his ship. Jackson faced me, and lunged to me, but I was pulled away by the men, and quickly jumped on the same boat as Roger.
“Hoist the anker!” Roger commanded once we landed on his ship. Once the anker was raised, we quickly sailed away from the other 2 ships, and then I heard a big booming sound. When I look back at the ships, I see massive flames of fire engulfing the ship. I scream, and frantically try to break from the men’s grip. My house caught fire the night Goodman and I escaped it. Seeing that ships catch fire brought back that horrid memory.
I felt the two men release me, and I fell forward. Roger caught me before I fell on my face though. Scared, I try pushing away from him but he wouldn’t release me!
“Tonight, let us rejoice in beating the Hedorican’s highest member in battle today!” Roger shouted to his crew members. I try blocking the sound of fire and screaming out of my mind so I can focus. The Hedorican clan and the Exbilibent clan have never been the type of clans to get along; in fact, they are always competing against one another. Roger’s clan members cheered, and raised their swords to the sky, “You men go and enjoy yourselves, and I have some business to attend to, please don’t disturb me.”
Roger pulled me into the captain’s cabin and closed the door behind him. I note that he has black hair and light blue eyes. He pulls me over to his desk and makes me sit on it; frustrated, I ask, “What do you want from me?”
He walked over to a first aid kit, and took out some wraps. I kept pressure on my leg, and watched as my blood dripped on the wood floor. Roger came over to me with a wet cloth in his hands and wraps. He knelt down in front of me, and ripped the fabric apart that’s on my leg. He wrapped the wet cloth around my wounded leg and applied pressure to it and said, “It’s not what I want from you, it’s what the bounty hunters want from you.”
“B-Bounty hunters?” I asked, trying to cope with the pain, “What do they want with me?”
He applied some more pressure, “You’re from a talented clan who has most likely taught you their moves. When your remains weren’t found in the fire, they put a bounty on finding you for $4,000, but the price has risen to $50,000 over the past two years. Whoever put that bounty up must really want you.”
He’s right; bounties normally drop as the years go on, not rise. Even if I have learned the ways of fighting from my clan, I’m not as skilled as my father and mother were. So why would someone want me for $50,000?
Roger wiped my blood off my calf with the wet towel. As he was putting my leg in wraps, he said, “Fortunately, the person who put up the bounty wants you alive; so you’re safe for now.”
“For now?” I asked
“Yes, some clans decide that they don’t want anyone to have the money, so they kill them. Bounty hunters won’t hesitate either, depending on the price of the bounty,” Roger explained, tightening the wrap on my calf and standing up to look at me, “You may dress like a guy, but I can tell you’re a girl just by looking into your eyes.”
I get up from the desk, making sure not to put too much pressure on my leg; I slowing walk away from him, “And what about you? Are you planning on turning me in?”
He walks up to me, “That depends… on how well you look in ladies cloths,” he then pulled my mask off my face. I glared at him as he examined my face, “Not a bad looking face you got there too; I’m shocked that you were able to hide such s cute face under that mask for all these years.”
I step away from him, and ignore his pompous comment, “I prefer to dress like this, so spare me the false comments.”
He looked away, “Have it your way, but you should know that my ship gets attacked daily. No need to fight though; I’ll protect you.”
“I don’t need you to protect me; I can handle myself,” I said, aggravated.
He then turned my head so I’m facing him; he grinned and said, “I have to protect what belongs to me, my dear.”
I narrow my eyes, and quickly slap him across the face, “Don’t take me so lightly; I don’t belong to anyone, and as far as I’m concerned, I’m only with you until you turn me in, so I could never belong to you.”
He was silent for a minute, and then grinned, “I suppose that’s true, so if I never turn you in, then you would belong to me forever, correct?”
“As if you’d give up $50,000 when it’s right in front of you,” I stated, irritated that he’s acting so childish.
“I’ve given up a million dollars when it was right in front of me. You don’t think I could give up $50,000?”
A million dollars?
“I’ll be out on the deck celebrating with my crew members. There’s a bed over there for you. Sleep well, dear,” Roger said, leaving.
I look over at the bed. It’s bigger than mine, and the set-up is different. He uses more of a Eastern style bed then a western style. Regardless of that, I grab sheets off the bed and lay on the floor across the room from the bed. How long will I stay on this ship for? Is Goodman alive? Did some of my crew members manage to escape alive? I had fallen asleep with these unanswerable questions.
I was woken up in the middle of the night by being lifted up and thrown on the bed.
“What are you doing?!” I shouted, scared and half awake.
“I’m going to bed, and you are too, so shut up!” Roger said, laying on the bed and going under the covers.
“I am not sharing a bed with you!” I said, getting up out of the bed, but feeling a pain in my left leg causes me to plop back down on the bed.
Roger then wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me next to him. I can smell the booze on his breath, “I don’t give a damn if you don’t want to share a bed with me; you’re staying in the same bed as me until you leave.”
I try fighting him, but he doesn’t loosen his grip one bit. I hope this jack ass turns me in already so I don’t have to put up with him.
